If you dont mind hard construction work overseas in hot sun, and getting your hands dirty this is the project for you.
The City of Recife has a program which involves people from the age of 18 to 67 , they take part on a one year programme. The project consists of building houses for homeless people, the construction and maintenance of social equipment in the community, maintain public buildings and to make communities safer from flooding during the rainy season. The program also incorporates an educational content, whereby all project participants work on construction activities for 4 hours a day and spend one hour in the classroom (on site) having basic math, science and Portuguese classes.
Why the placement needs you!
The participants of the programme receive the minimum salary allowed in Brazil (260 Reais – or 80 US Dollars per month.) They all have either no formal schooling or very little. There is a shortage of skilled persons, supervisors, assistants in the community and classroom to help organize, manage, and supervise the activities.
The project therefore aims to teach construction and home building skills to those without proper formal education.
What kind of skills do I need?
Any construction, house building or engineering knowledge would be most welcome, but the main assets are probably best described as a willingness to work, a cheerful disposition and good organisation skills, as well not minding working outdoors in hot sun.
Your Role as a Volunteer
You will be helping with the construction and supervision of home building and other construction and maintenance activities as well as supervising and organising groups of workers. You maybe required to teach English language during the one hour per day educational content of the program.
