Cancer Hospital Facts

The Cancer Hospital in Recife, has been and is a reference for cancer treatment in Brazil.

• Each-day, there are 500 - 600 assesments undertaken
• There is a daily intake of 300 new patients (in and out patient)there are 163 beds available
• There are 20 - 30 surgeries per day
• The City of Recife has the 2nd highest incidence in the world , of cervical cancer (83 per 100,000 women).

      

Resources at the Hospital

The Brazilian Government only pays for 500 consultancies per month - but they need the finance and resources to conduct 1500 per month.

The Government only pays for 1 session of chemotherapy per month, per patient. But in reality the patient usually requires two sessions per month (1 every 15 days).

      

Your Role as a Volunteer

You will need to be a medical student, doctor, nurse , healthcare worker or student - or other qualified person|professional to volunteer in the cancer hospital.

Accommodation

You may select to stay in a small hotel, or in a homestay with a Brazilian family (hotel is subject to availability, and may incur an additional cost).Your location will be either Recife or Olinda ,if you have a preference, please tell us.

    You may volunteer for up to 12 weeks, each additional week is as follows:

    US = $150 per additional week

    UK =  £85 per additional week

    Canada = $160 per additional week

    Euro =  €105 per additional week

    Other currencies available upon request
