Our project is in partnership with The Federal University of Pernambuco, although based in Recife, it is entirely possible to find yourself volunteering on any site in the nort-east region of Brazil, including, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, of Olinda.
What kind of skills do I need?
Experience or skills are not a pre-requisite, however, you will of course have a keen interest in the conservation and preservation of historical sites and artefacts.
If you are experieced or qualified in this area, the project would love to have you as a volunteer, they would really apreciate your help and expertise.
What is currently going on?
At present, we have volunteer work going on at several indigenous Indian sites, and the recent discovery of what is thought to be a burial site for slaves. We have the restoration of the João Batista dos Militares Church, which dates from the early days of the Portuguese colonization and one of the few buildings not affected by the 1631 fire started by the Dutch as they seized control of the region. As well as the renovation of the Nossa Senhora das Neves Church and São Francisco Convent (Brazil's oldest convent), which dates from 1585 and is in urgent need of repair. The building is listed on the World Monument Fund Watch List of endangered historic monuments.
Also, very exciting sites of interest relating to the Portuguese and Dutch invasions and the discovery of the original city foundations. In addition to the regular work of preserving monuments, buildings, churches and other important artefacts.
