Rio de Janeiro – Rio, conjures different images for different people – some of those images will be of sun, sea and samba. Other vivid thoughts maybe specific, such as, Copacabana, Ipanema or Sugarloaf mountain or maybe the world famous Rio Carnival.
Others may think of the blinding poverty, and shanty favelas nestled into the hilltops – or the smba dancers and samba schools. Whatever your perception, there is nothing like the real thing – nothing like experiencing Rio for yourself…
Rio de Janeiro has a spectacular, very natural setting which can be seen spectacularly by riding the cable-car from and to Sugarloaf mountain.
Rio de Janeiro is a city of celebration and party, the carnival, the samba, the music, the beaches, the football – overlooking all of this is the huge statue of Christ the Redeemer, atop the Corcovado mountain.
 
Rio de Janeiro (River of January) owes its name to the Portuguese explorer, Gaspar de Lemos, who on 20th January 1502, reached the paradise through Guanabara Bay.
The spot where the city of Rio was founded, sits just below the Sugarloaf mountain, it was originally named; St Sebastian of the January 20th River, in honour of St Sebastian whose anniversary falls on the 20th. It later become known as Rio de Janeiro, or simply, Rio. Culturally and, musically speaking Rio de Janeiro is arguably unsurpassed, almost everyone has heard the Antonio Carlos Jobim composition; Garota de Ipanema (Girl from Ipanema) – Moreover, it was the foundation song for the musical genre Bossa Nova.
