    Travel Program (week 2)

3 Days in Porto de Galinhas

Porto de Galinhas is considered to be the best beach coastline on the north-east coast of Brazil. About an hour and a half from Recife, we will be spending 3 days there.

The diverse environment of Porto de Galinhas ensures a true paradise. The beauty of the beaches is magnified by the natural treasure of coral reef pools, some of which are 8 metres deep, in essence they are natural aquariums where you can bathe with fish , prawns and lobsters in water at 28 ° Celsius.

Porto de Galinhas is a serious luxury destination providing its visitors with a range of good hotels and fine restaurants. Situated in a most beautiful part of Pernambuco which in many respects emphasizes the contradictions which are evident in many parts of Brazil.

There are many magnificent structures and buildings from the colonial days of the Portuguese and Dutch invasions, the legacy is visible with 60km of sugar and coconut plantations running from coast to coast in the region.

Day 4 - Return to Recife

  • Guided tour of Recife, capital of the state of Pernambuco. View historic buildings, visit local markets and eat lunch at one of the famous restaurants in the Old City. Continue to Olaria de Francisco Brennand, a well-known ceramic factory and museum, and view first-hand artisans plying their craft in Brazil.

    Day 5 Catamarã Tour

  • Visits to Fort Orange, Peixe - Boi Marine Park, Maria Farinha beach, Itamaracá and Coroa do Avião Islands) This is an absolutely breathtaking tour of the rivers and coastline of the north-east  – a thrilling experience lasting a whole day (includes Lunch).

Day 6 Visit to Ecological Reserve

The final day will be spent at an ecological reserve (includes a zoo). We will be walking some trails, going deep into the forest with a mateiro (forest guide), with some optional rock climbing and Rapel activities available.

We will round off with a special group dinner.

    .........................................................................................................................................

    Project Work (weeks 3/4)

The remainder of your time will be spent on your placement.......

    4. Street Kids Focus!
    --------------------------------------------------

If your passionate about helping to convey dignity, providing love, motivation and hope to Brazilian children and teenagers who live on the streets, this is the project for you.

It is a sad fact that many hundreds  of thousands of children live on the streets in Brazil.

They have to learn to fend for themselves, most days searching for food in garbage bins! Of course without proper nutrition and sanitary places, street children are most vulnerable to food poisoining, infections and many other health problems. Some older children find themselves on the wrong side of the law and are forced to deal in drugs.

Over 500,000 young girls are forced into prostitution, and sexual activity amongst street children is often unprotected, it is most clear why this project needs help from volunteers.

     Why the Project needs you!

In the past street children have been the hottest of hot potatoes, the authorities pretended they didnt exist, and many were murdered by vigilante groups they were seen as a menace, giving Brazil a bad name and putting off investors.

Thankfully things have changed, and the government now have established programs to help street children.

Unfortunately though this isnt enough, and without the intervention and help from NGOs and volunteers like you the situation would be much worse than it is.

Our Program is in Recife, in partnership with the Local authority, which
is partly funded by the Federal Government of Brazil.

The project has a number of ¨safe houses¨ located throughout the City,
which attempts to deal with specific problematic areas related to Street
    Children in Recife.

For instance, there are locations for Children who have been subjected to
domestic violence(and are on the streets because of this), sexual
    violence, substance abuse, prostitution, etc...

The locations are single sex, the exception being some centres which are
¨drop in¨ and offer general help and support regarding day to day living.
