                  --------------------------------------------------

If your looking to do something different this Easter Holiday, you could do a lot worse than take an exciting volunteer holiday in Brazil.

There are many festivals and events on during April. One worth a particular mention is the annual Passion of Christ where the best thespian talent in Brazil converge to an outdoor theatre (purported to be the largest outdoor theatre in the World). Tens of thousands head for the Pernambuco hills to witness this magnificent spectacle.

Throughout April we are offering 1, 2, 3 or 4 week volunteer vacations on the following projects:

Our Dilemma!
-----------------------------------------------

Prospective volunteers often ask us why, compared to comparable organizations, our placement costs are decidedly less!

Being cheaper than others is sometimes a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it is refreshing to discover that you are able to fund and experience an affordable overseas volunteer travel experience. On the other hand, there maybe a feeling of where’s the catch.

Have I got news for you!  - There isn’t one…

Six reasons why we are much cheaper than others:

  • We refuse to fall into the corporate trap and allow you to fund plush offices, with 2 inch deep piled carpets, and oak paneled boardrooms.
  • We refuse to receive or pay massive sales bonuses to our people.
  • We refuse to allow you to fund our long haul flights.
  • We refuse to keep most of the money ourselves and only contribute between 18 and 30% of your fee to your destination economy.
  • We refuse to set up sister foundations to make it look as if your fee is being redirected, when most of the foundation money is from other, external sources.
  • We refuse to spend your money on expensive brochures and even more expensive marketing campaigns to tell you how brilliant we are.

             3. Movies, Music and Mattresses

    ---------------------------------------------

On behalf of one of the orphanages in our Orphanage Help Program we would like to express sincere gratitude to Doreen and Yvonne Connolly from County Leitrim in The Republic of Ireland.

On a recent visit to Recife, they went shopping and bought new mattresses and bedding sheets, a television, DVD player and music system, in addition to a most generous supply of school and art supplies!

    Muito Obrigado!

                                     4. All You Need to Know About Pernambuco

  •                   ----------------------------------------------------

Most of our projects are in north-east Brazil, in the State of Pernambuco.

Pernambuco, is a landof dances such as the embolada, maracatu, caranguejo, mangaba and mangue-beat, proud of its regional culture.  Land of carnival – with a blend of different rhythms– frevo, caboclinhos, samba, afoxê and axé-music. Many masters of popular art are from this State so full of personalities, such as: Ariano Suassuna, Alceu Valença, Chico Science, Cícero Dias, Abelardo da Hora, Mestre Vitalino, and many others.

By day you may visit the beach, shop at the malls, art galleries and handicraft shops; or stroll down the old streets of Recife and Olinda. When night falls, new and sensational opportunities arise. This is when you should visit the entertainment sections of the Metropolitan Region of Recife, with its spectacular shows and splendid bars, serving its renowned cuisine of seafood and regional dishes.

Recife, the capital of Pernambuco, is the place to start for those who wish to get to know its beaches, culture and history. Past and present, modernity and tradition co-exist in this city criss-crossed by rivers and known as the “Venice of Brazil”. Old two- or three-story houses and art shops share space with luxurious buildings. Sophisticated restaurants compete with tiny shops that serve rich and tasty menus. The hard part is to decide which is best.

The city of waters and reefs offers international-quality infrastructure and excellent options in tourist services. Recife has bridges crossing its canals and three main rivers – the Capibaribe, Beberibe, and Jordão – that, over the waters, reflect the city’s history in mansions, museums, churches, convents, monasteries and forts. It is no surprise that the inhabitants of Recife built the first bridge in Latin America in 1643 (Maurício de Nassau).
