Volunteering On Our Soccer and Sports Project In Brazil…

I Guess its appropriate to plug our Soccer and Sports Coaching Project this month - partly due to that little football tournament currently taking place in Germany.

The majority of Brazilian boys maybe poor, with little to eat, have poor future prospects, but give them a football, and you see a boy transformed. Every community, almost every ¨street¨

Weekend in Paradise - But Dont Forget Work on Monday!

 Porto de Galinhas

After an extremely gratifying week of volunteer work, many of our volunteers head off to the beach for the weekend. Porto de Galinhas is less than 40 miles from Recife , easily accessible by public transport, and is an absolutely delightful paradise. Porto is a serious luxury destination providing its visitors with a range of good hotels and fine restaurants. Situated in a most beautiful region of Pernambuco, which in many respects emphasizes the great contradictions evident in much of Brazil, because just a kilometre or two out of town you will witness abject poverty...

The beauty of the beach is magnified by the natural treasure of coral reef pools, some of which are 8 metres deep, in essence they are natural aquariums where you can bathe with fish , prawns and lobsters in water at 28 ° Celsius.

There are many magnificent structures and buildings from the colonial days of the Portuguese and Dutch invasions, the legacy is visible with 60km of sugar and coconut plantations running from coast to coast in the region...

When Irish Eyes Are Smiling....

¨Come into the parlour¨, and meet Aoife
(above-left) and Camila (above-right)....Looks like a bit of an art class - with some English language thrown in to boot - naming body parts (urgh) - bet they did the "Okey-cokey" as well....you know the one...¨you put your left-leg in....¨dum de dum, and all that jazz..

Is it safe to volunteer in Brazil?
-----------------------------------------------

We are often asked ¨is it safe to volunteer in Brazil¨? My usual reply is: ¨absolutely, providing you stay within the guidelines outlined to you , during your orientation¨

Lets get something straight; we would never, ever, compromise your safety and well being whilst you are in Brazil. Providing you remain within the parameters laid down by our in-country team you will remain perfectly safe whilst you are on one of our programs.

Here are some of the things which we do to ensure your well being in Brazil.

  • We give you comprehensive orientation on safety and security issues
  • We have a 24 hour emergency, in-country support network
  • We have a partnership with a Military Police Division who are responsible for the safety, security and well being of volunteers, tourists and other foreign visitors(and Brazilian visitors too). Most of the Police from this division speak English to boot.
  • All our projects and programs are with official government agencies (bar one project which is an NGO), besides having a legal duty to ensure your safety we have a moral duty to - to this end, all aspects of your volunteering work and the projects meet our rigorous safety and security criteria.

Further, some volunteers decide to make the most of their visit to Brazil, and often travel to other parts of Brazil after their program. It is worth noting that even when you finish your program with us, we are still going to be here for you, should you need our help or advice - put simply, for as long as you are in Brazil, you have the support of our organisation, throughout.
