Womens Health, Child and New-born Health Care.

 

The Maternal and Infant Institute of Pernambuco.

 

 

The institute was founded in 1960 by Fernando Figueira. It is a non-profit organisation founded on the basis of giving free medical assistance to poor mothers and children.

It was the first hospital in Brazil to be designated by UNICEF as a Hosptial Friend to Children.

In 2004, The Brazilian Ministry of Health and Education conferred the status of , Medical School Hospital in both pre-and post graduation medical training. 

   

Womens Health Issues

The hospitals womens health department engages in 4800 consultancies per month, primarily, in the following areas; Pre-natal - Breast health – Gynecology - Sexually transmitted diseases – Aids - Female child care – Menopause - Family planning – Heart – Dentistry - Psychology

 

Other Health Facts

The hospital laboratory performs analysis more than 50,000 times per month.

The Mothers Milk Bank ,feeds more than 30,000 babies per year.

The image diagnostics department tends to more than 144,000 patients per year.

The Medical school in the hospital , trains and helps both pre and post graduate students. 

The hospital relies on donations and funds through its foundation and benificiaries.

You will need to be a medical student, doctor, nurse or other qualified person|professional to volunteer on this project. If you have experience or training in the following areas; please apply:

Resources and Departments at the Hospital

  • There are 540 beds and 110 consultamcy rooms, they provide a service for 500,000 patients per year.
  • Pediatricians see 30,000 child patients per month.The emergency pediatric department attends to 350 cases per day, of which 50 result in hospitalisation.
  • The Kangaroo Mother Unit; aka Premature unit has 18 beds and since 1994 has looked after more than 3000 premature babies.
  • There is a kidney transplant unit, the only one of its kind in north-east Brazil.
  • The heart surgery unit has 18 beds and currently performs 30 heart surgeries per month - including transplant.
  • In 1987, the hospital diagnosed the first patient with Aids in Pernambuco. The HIV|Aids unit has 16 beds.
